A former director of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation’s anti-income laundering office states he is the “whistleblower” that possible prompted the general public inquiry analyzing how hundreds of tens of millions of dollars in unlawful money flowed by the province’s casinos.

Ross Alderson, who testified for far more than four hours Thursday, reported he was pushed to leak details about the suspected extent of income laundering at casinos and bureaucracy to the exercise at prime levels.

“Did I leak information to the media? Certainly I did,” Alderson informed the Cullen Commission public inquiry into funds laundering. “We would not be in this article currently, if I didn’t.”

The New Democrat governing administration appointed B.C. Supreme Court Justice Austin Cullen in 2019 to direct the income laundering inquiry right after various experiences concluded the flow of hundreds of hundreds of thousands in unlawful funds linked to arranged crime impacted the province’s serious estate, luxurious car or truck and gaming sectors.

Alderson, who labored in B.C.’s gaming market considering that 2008, resigned from the Crown-owned lottery company in 2017.

He testified his anti-dollars laundering investigation and intelligence workforce was “second to none,” but initiatives to beat unlawful income at casinos was hampered by “indifference.”

Alderson was granted standing to appear at the commission following Cullen determined his “legal, reputational and or privateness pursuits may perhaps be impacted by the results of the fee in respect of his acts and omissions in the gaming marketplace amongst 2008 and 2017.”

Alderson, who testified from Australia where he is now residing, faced inquiries from the commission about his unresponsiveness to a summons to testify that was issued in March 2020.

Commission lawyer Patrick McGowan questioned Alderson why the fee experienced to carry out an global “manhunt” to locate the previous lottery official.

“I was not just hiding in a cave in Afghanistan,” explained Alderson. “I was in Australia, having to pay taxes.”

He explained he was involved with relatives issues and thought it was up to the commission to obtain him.
